Omega-3s, Not Omega-6s, May Help Reduce Skin Cancer RiskAUSTIN, Minn.--In the June 19 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (98, 13: 7510-5, 2001) (www.pnas.org), researchers found that ingesting omega-3s may inhibit skin cancer, while omega-6s may increase the risk. Led by Guangming Liu, Ph.D., from the University of Minnesota, researchers found that omega-3s such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) effectively reduced cancer, whereas omega-6 arachidonic acid (AA) may promote the risk for the disease. The study's authors concluded that the dietary ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids may be a significant factor in stemming tumor development.
