WASHINGTON—The Council for Responsible Nutrition announced it is sponsoring research through its “ Life… supplemented” campaign to understand the use of dietary supplements by health care professionals and how that use may impact patient counseling on the topic. The online survey, developed with Ipsos, was fielded during September, and results should be released in early November.
Current published research has not fully elucidated how health care professionals use supplements, nor their level of education about the products and how that impacts their recommendations to consumers. “This represents a significant knowledge gap that needs to be addressed,” said Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., director of Education for the University of Arizona’s Program in Integrative Medicine. “At this time, we do not know how the majority of health care professionals view dietary supplements in terms of their own health, or how these views then impact their discussions with patients in the clinical setting.”
CRN (www.CRNusa.org) also launched a special Web site (www.LifeSupplemented.org) to encourage consumers to create a personal wellness regimen incorporating a healthy diet, dietary supplements and exercise. In addition, an interactive scorecard was designed to help consumers determine their personal level of health—AlphaWELL, WELL, WannabeWELL or OhWELL.
