Description:
The World Health Organization statistics have estimated 246 million
people worldwide to be affected by diabetes. The incidence rates are at a
further 7 million developing diabetes each year resulting in 389 million
diabetics by 2025. Currently, it is the seventh leading cause of death and
the leading cause of new blindness and kidney failure. Patients and health
care providers are not equipped to deal with the complexities of a disease
that is rapidly challenging the health care system in North America and
pushing it beyond its limits. In such a climate how does a patient make
informed choices regarding the plethora of management tools that are
offered, as well as successfully regulating blood glucose? Najla Guthrie
and David Crowley will examine alternative methods to manage this disease.
Judi Quilici Timmcke will provide an overview of the various nutrients that
have science to support blood sugar levels. Formulation ideas, label
suggestions, issues on regulatory claims and products that support diabetics’
overall health will also be reviewed.
